Grey’s Week in Review: News, Notes and Tidbits

The biggest Grey’s news of the past week was, of course, Katherine Heigl’s Emmy nomination revocation and badmouthing the show’s writers. I won’t beat this almost-dead horse too much, but it seems this all may be a ruse to get off the show. Heigl’s contract shows her last season to be 2009-10. I’m not thinking she’ll make it that long.

  • It seems writers are hard at work preparing for season five, which begins filming June 25. In particular, they are doing their homework on the proper way to present the lesbian storyline of characters Callie and Hahn.
  • Before heading to the set, Patrick Dempsey has remained busy on the racetrack. He was also recently named to the Forbes 100 Most Powerful Celebrities list – ranking somewhere in the 80’s.

  • Eric Dane and his spouse Rebecca Gayheart took a last minute vacay last week, enjoying the sun and surf during a getaway on St. Barts.

Grey’s Profile: Patrick Dempsey

Happy Father’s Day!

Who more appropriate to feature on this day celebrating kings of their castles than Dr. McDreamy/Patrick Dempsey himself.

picapp.com

Dempsey, of course, won my tv drama loving heart from the first episode of Grey’s and continues to win heart of us ladies all over the world through his hit movies like “Enchanted” and “Made of Honor.”

Dempsey also recently made the news this weekend - being named No. 84 of Forbes Top 100 Most Powerful Celebrities.

Bio:

Patrick Galen Dempsey was born Jan. 13, 1966 in Lewiston, Maine and grew up in Turner, Maine, the youngest of three children born to Amanda and William Dempsey, an insurance agent. Dempsey attended St. Dominic Regional High School for his senior year, where his mother worked as a secretary, but dropped out before he graduated. Dempsey also spent some of his school years in the town of Buckfield, Maine, where he attended Buckfield High School.

Dempsey has been married twice. In 1987, he married actress and acting coach Rochelle “Rocky” Parker, who appeared with Dempsey in the film “In the Mood”. At the time of their marriage, Dempsey was 21 years old, while Parker was 48, with a son, Corey Parker, who was one year Dempsey’s senior. The couple divorced in 1994. On July 31, 1999, Dempsey married Jillian Fink, a Connecticut resident and founder of Delux Beauty. The couple has three children: a daughter, Tallulah Fyfe, born Feb. 20, 2002, and twin sons Darby Galen and Sullivan Patrick, born on Feb. 1, 2007.

Dempsey enjoys auto racing in his spare time, having driven the pace car in the Indianapolis 500, and raced in the Rolex 24 at Daytona and Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. He is currently the co-owner of IndyCar Series team Vison Racing. In 2008 he will be competing in 5 of the 12 Rolex Sports Car Series racing series races.

In 1997, Dempsey’s mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She would be treated for the disease and have two relapses and have it treated another two times. In response to his mother’s bouts with cancer, Dempsey helped start the Patrick Dempsey Center in his home town of  Lewsiton, Maine

Trivia:

  • As a teen, Dempsey was an adept juggler, tying for second in a national juggling competition.
  • Enjoys collecting antiques, remodeling homes, and skiing in his spare time.
  • Auditioned for the role of “Dr. Gregory House” on “House M.D. (2004).
  • Voted No. 13 in Elle (France) Magazine’s “15 Sexiest Men” poll (June 2007).
  • Tried out for the role of Duckie in “Pretty in Pink”(1986).
  • Dempsey was diagnosed with dyslexia at age 12. As a result, he is forced to memorize all his lines in order to perform, even for auditions where he was unlikely to get the part.

 Personal Quotes

One day my 3-year-old daughter said, ‘You’re very handsome, Poppy.’ That was the best compliment ever.”

The Heigl Saga Continues

The latest chapter in the Heigl saga is now making headlines, with Grey’s writers now letting their feelings be heard about the actress’ writer-insulting comments and Emmy nomination revocation.

The key Grey’s insider contacted Entertainment Weekly about Heigl’s action:
“The show bent over backwards to accommodate her film schedule, and then she criticizes the show for lack of material?” the insider said. “It’s an ungrateful slap in the face to the very writers responsible for her Emmy win in the first place.”

We all knew it was going to happen. Heigl has ticked off at least one of the writers. If rumors are true that she wanted out of her contract, then there are other ways of doing so, although this way might be one of the fastest.

And not only that, fans continue to rant on both sides of the issue, with most of them being disappointed (to say the least) in Heigl’s attitude and actions. One fan even comment that they hoped the network would NOT release Heigl from her contract and have her resuscitating deer for another season. (That’s pretty funny, but the show as a whole would suffer, I think).

The best comment I have read so far is that a good actor/actress takes that writing - whether it is good or bad - and uses their talents to make it great. So true!

I remain true to my gut in assuming that, unless she changes her attitude, Heigl’s days on Grey’s may very well be numbered. This, sadly, seems to be exactly what she wants.

I truly hope that Heigl will not forget where she came from - particularly those whose proverbial pens helped her win Emmys and make movies.

The Fans Have Spoken

The entertainment world continues to reel over Katherine Heigl’s withdrawal from the Emmy nominations. It seems fans are in an uproar over her actions as well.

In response to the many Grey’s blogs out there, I see a lot of words like “big head”, “selfish” and that, in general, she should have just kept her mouth shut.

I also read that in past seasons of Grey’s, Izzie was given plenty of spotlight (Denny Duckett, for instance) and that the other characters needed some priority on the show.

I totally agree.

Heigl’s television and film successes seem to have made her head explode and I feel that she is walking a very fine line. (Would she have had all that film success without Grey’s?)

I don’t know much about the television industry, but I know that publicly insulting writers can’t be a good thing. If she continues on this path, she could turn into one of those “good actors that no one wants to work with.”

This whole seemingly babyish attitude seems to have opened my eyes to Katherine Heigl as an actress. I have to wonder how much longer she will last…

All about Heigl…or is it?

The biggest Grey’s news to hit the scene of late is Katherine Heigl’s rejection of an Emmy Award nomination, due to the fact that she felt she was not given a good enough “presence” in Season 4 of the series.

Well what I think can be said in two words — boo-hoo!

picapp.com

It’s not enough that’s she’s already won an Emmy for her role as Dr. Izzie Stevens, or that she’s making it big in the movie business — with 27 Dresses, the film she’s currently working on and the recent announcement that she will star in and produce another film — she has to gripe that she’s not getting enough play on Grey’s.

From what I could tell, that is true — she got downplayed a bit in Season 4. But seriously, the show is not all about her. Izzie had been through a lot in the past couple of seasons and maybe Shonda Rhimes thought Heigl might have needed to take a back seat this time around and will bring her more forward next time.

Maybe Heigl was just being honest about why she removed her nomination, but in this case she could have stepped up and said, “I just want to give someone else a shot” or she could have just said nothing. But I guess that’s just not her style.

It seems that maybe Heigl just needs to learn to take turns. After all, it’s not “Stevens’ Anatomy,” it is Grey’s Anatomy.

Grey’s Week in Review

Grey’s isn’t making many headlines since the conclusion of season four, but here’s a “week in review” of sorts about what you might have missed over the past week…

  • Katherine Heigel is in the midst of making her next romantic comedy, The Ugly Truth. It’s due out in 2009.
  • Patrick Dempsey, whose movie Made of Honor is still on the big screen, is spending his off-the-set time on the racetrack. Dempsey drove the Cask No. 16 car in the GT class at Saturday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series race at Watkins Glen International in New York. He also made an appearance at a cancer fundraiser, donating a signed racing suit to the cause.
  • Chandra Wilson and Private Practice’s Tim Daly were named 2008 Lee National Denim Day Ambassadors. As part of the United States’ largest single-day fundraiser for breast cancer, Wilson and Daly have been named this year’s Lee National Denim Day (Oct. 3) Ambassadors. The two will be featured in a public service campaign encouraging viewers to put on a favorite pair of jeans and make a $5 donation to women’s cancer programs.
  • Private Practice’s Kate Walsh showed her support for a cause as well, calling Barak Obama’s Democratic nomination “a great movement in American history.”
  • T.R. Knight told media that he had no plans to marry his significant other, 19-year-old Mark Cornelson, and took the time to defend the age gap in the relationship. Knight is 35.

Grey’s Profile: Eric Dane

When Eric Dane’s character, Mark Sloan, first came on the Grey’s scene I only saw him as a temporary character – someone who would take Addison away and let Meredith and Derek be together. Although that didn’t happen, Sloan/Dane has fast-become one of my favorites to watch on the show.

picapp.com

Bio (from tv.com)
Eric William Dane was born in 1972, in San Francisco, Calif. He is the older of two brothers. His father is an architect and interior designer based in San Francisco. Dane was married to actress Rebecca Gayheart on October 29, 2004 (sorry ladies).

Dane has acted as a recurring guest-star on the television series Charmed. He appeared in seasons five and six as Phoebe Halliwell’s yearlong boyfriend Jason Dean. He also appeared in movies such as The Basket (2000), Feast (2005), Open Water 2: Adrift (2006), X-Men 3: The Last Stand (2006), and many other great roles.

Fun Facts (www.tv.com):

  • Eric was nominated in 2008 for a SAG Award along with his Grey’s Anatomy cast mates for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
  • Eric is set to star in the upcoming movie Marley and Me.
  • Eric was chosen as one of People Magazine’s Sexiest Men Alive for 2007. (He deserves it)
  • Eric’s character, Mark Sloan, on Grey’s Anatomy was so popular, he became a regular for the third season.
  • Eric had to use double-stick tape to keep the towel on during his shower scene in Grey’s Anatomy.
  • Eric and Rebecca Gayheart got married the same night they decided to over dinner. They immediately hopped a plane to Vegas and had their cab driver Sam stand in as best man.
  • Eric appeared in the movie, X-Men 3: The Last Stand as “Multiple Man”. (That’s one for the comic book movie fans, like myself.)
  • Eric appeared as Jason Dean in a total of 10 episodes of Charmed.

Quotable:
(On ‘McSteamy’ vs. ‘McDreamy’) “I don’t feel any competition with Patrick [Dempsey]. But he keeps asking me when my calendar is coming out.”
